The 2023 harvest: determination and presence

Determination, unwavering faith in the power bestowed by Europe"s highest active volcano to the vines and utmost commitment to the plants’ health. The 2023 harvest has come to an end, marking the conclusion of a year that demanded particular attention and presence.?
We asked Valeria Agosta and daughter Serena Costanzo, at the helm of Palmento Costanzo, to tell us more about it.
Valeria, how was this harvest?
This year, like in the last two years, rising temperatures required us to anticipate harvest. During this season, more than ever, our most important mission was to be present in the vineyards to ensure the plants’ health.
Our special terroir has been our good fortune: the innate force of our native vines, most of which are centuries old, combined with the favorable microclimatic conditions on the slopes of the Etna, helped us contain the damage caused by downy mildew, which was brought by the heavy rains in May and unfortunately plagued many producers.
Which kind of operations were carried out in the vineyard?
Vineyard operations have been consistent with and always faithful to the standards of Palmento Costanzo’s organic management. Sulfur and copper were the only elements utilized, complementing the treatment of the soil with biodynamic practices aimed at maintaining organic matter, essential to the preservation of the precious biodiversity of the Etna, which provides strength and promotes the health of the plants.?
The choice to be “Strictly Etna” and only grow native varieties proved to be a rewarding philosophy: in a complex year like the one just past, the the innate strength of the native grape varieties was undeniably highlighted.
Serena, what do you think about this close of the season? Do we already have expectations for this 2023?
Despite the reduced quantities, a natural consequence of the plant’s adaptive reaction to the challenges of a complex season, we are satisfied by the grapes’ quality and eagerly await the evolution of the wines to come. Our symbiotic relationship with the vines grows stronger year after year. The determined nature of this terroir and of our native grape varieties, combined with the tireless commitment of the Palmento Costanzo team, allow us to look confidently towards the future.
