Along contradas and hills

The magic of the Etna and its surprising nuances

Palmento Costanzo - Etna
Vineyards

Along contradas and hills, “strictly Etna”.

Palmento Costanzo owns 18 hectares, 12 of which are in Contrada Santo Spirito, in Passopisciaro. Here stands the first vineyard that was acquired by the Costanzo family, populated by vines that exceed 130 years of age. The remaining plots stretch towards the nearby contradas of Randazzo, Zottorinoto, Bragaseggi and Feudi di Mezzo.

In Santa Maria di Licodia, the family cultivates Contrada Cavaliere: a cru in the southwestern side of the Etna that is particularly suitable to Carricante.

Contrada Santo Spirito

Contrada Santo Spirito is Palmento Costanzo’s prime cru. This exemplary vineyard is home to the estate’s ancient rows, which bear the selected grapes that yield the winery’s most iconic labels: Prefillossera, Contrada Santo SpiritoEtna Rosso andContrada Santo Spirito Etna Bianco. It represents the most authentic soul of the north side of the volcano and is mainly cultivated with Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccino. The wines produced are distinguished by utmost elegance, excellent fruit and superb structure, featuring remarkable minerality and a surprising longevity.

The proximity to the lava flow that in 1879 redesigned the landscape of the area further characterized the soils, which Palmento Costanzo enhances by identifying Particella 464, 466 and 468. Each Particella resulted from a specific zoning process that was based on its proximity to the lava rock and brings out a distinct trait of the Contrada. This allows to reveal the impressive sensory richness that the Etna has created over time in the glass.

Contrada Cavaliere

Located in Santa Maria di Licodia, on the southwestern side of the Etna, Contrada Cavaliere is the fruit of the desire to explore new expressions of Etna viticulture, revealing its remarkable expressivity. The Contrada’s main trait is its altitude that reaches 1,000 meters, leading to extreme diurnal temperature variation that helps in defining the aromas of Carricante, the sole variety grown. The fine-textured soils, rich in skeletal grains and organic matter, give life to full and intense wines characterized by a rich and pulpy flavor. The white wines maintain the typical freshness brought by mountain viticulture, also developing intense aromas that recall the sea, revealing fine notes of exotic fruit and an elegantly sapid finish.
